William Carey Dowd (1835-1860) was born in Tarboro, N.C., the son of prominent North Carolina Baptist minister the Reverend Patrick Dowd (1799-1866). William Carey Dowd graduated from the University of North Carolina in 1858 and became a tutor in Latin until his health caused his resignation in winter of 1858. The University of North Carolina was chartered by the state's General Assembly in 1789. Its first student was admitted in 1795.
